How to Change Culture in CK3

Change a character's culture or convert a county with the console in Crusader Kings III, plus how conversion works.

Culture drives your innovations, men-at-arms, and traditions, so switching it is a popular console tweak. After enabling debug mode, you can change a character's culture or convert an individual county.

Change your character's culture

Use set_culture with the culture's ID:

Add a character ID to change someone else — for example set_culture norse 78.

Convert a county's culture

To change the culture of a county instead of a person, use change_culture with the county ID followed by the culture ID:

Here 38 is the county ID. Browse the full list of CK3 cultures to find any culture's ID.

Converting culture without cheats

If you'd rather do it in-game:

  • A county slowly adopts its ruler's culture; promote culture conversion through the county view to speed it up.
  • Raise cultural acceptance, then use the culture screen to diverge, hybridize, or adopt traditions.
  • Marrying into another culture and educating heirs there shifts your dynasty over generations.
