How to Add Traits in CK3

Add or remove any trait with the console in Crusader Kings III, plus how to gain traits the normal way.

Traits shape a character's personality, skills, and congenital looks, so editing them is one of the most common reasons to open the console. Once you've enabled debug mode, you can add or remove any trait instantly.

The add trait command

Add a trait with add_trait followed by the trait's ID:

That adds the trait to your own character. To target someone else, add their character ID at the end — for example add_trait brave 58.

The remove trait command

Remove a trait the same way with remove_trait:

This is the quickest way to clear unwanted congenital or stress traits like blind, drunkard, or maimed.

Finding trait IDs

You need the internal ID, not the in-game name. Browse the full list of CK3 traits to find any trait's ID and a ready-to-copy command. Personality traits use simple IDs like gregarious or diligent, while education and congenital traits use leveled IDs.

Gaining traits without cheats

If you'd rather earn them in-game, traits come from:

  • The lifestyle focus and education you pick — these grant personality and skill traits over time.
  • Events and decisions, which can award (or inflict) traits based on your choices.
  • Inheritance — congenital traits like Genius or Beauty pass down and strengthen through careful breeding.

Frequently asked questions

What is the add trait cheat in CK3?

The console command add_trait adds a trait to your character — for example, add_trait brave. Add a character ID after it to target someone else. It only works in debug mode.

How do you remove a trait in CK3?

Use remove_trait followed by the trait ID, for example remove_trait blind. This is the usual way to clear congenital or negative traits like blind, drunkard, or stressed.

Where do I find trait IDs in CK3?

Every trait's ID is listed on its page in the trait database. Most personality traits use a plain ID like brave or diligent, while leveled traits (education, congenital) use a numbered ID.
